Panaji: Retail sector in Goa is struggling due to severe shortage of skilled labor and with the high attrition rate, retail outlets in Goa are forced to hire personnel from other states, said the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI). He also said that the absence of a clear roadmap and political support has hampered the growth of the sector in the state.
GCCI urged the state government to develop a dedicated retail policy and also requested Goa University to integrate retail management into the academic calendar.
“With the retail sector gaining prominence and many retail chains entering Goa, employment opportunities are limited for Goans as most of the staff are selected from outside Goa in due to the lack of formal courses in Goa,” former GCCI Chairman Manoj Caculo said.
A GCCI delegation met with officials from the Department of Industries, Commerce and Commerce and the University of Goa and said that although the retail sector in Goa is growing, there is a severe shortage qualified personnel in Goa and that there are no full-fledged courses. for the retail sector.
Caculo, along with GCCI Retail Committee Chairman Hari Kaul and GCCI Managing Director Sanjay Amonkar called University of Goa Vice Chancellor Harilal Menon and discussed the terms of an independent program for the retail sector.
The retail sector contributes nearly 10% of India’s GDP and accounts for 8% of total employment in India.
“Starters have to be trained by local retail chains in Goa which takes a lot of time and effort and due to the competitive nature of the industry there is a high attrition rate,” Caculo said. .
GCCI is working with local retailers to improve operational efficiency, expand service reach and quality, and may begin training courses for local retailers, Kaul said.
Menon invited GCCI to join the Board of Studies of Goa University as a special guest to develop the retail management structure and curriculum.
GCCI had prepared a draft retail policy for Goa which was submitted to the state government in 2019, but the government is yet to take a decision on it.
