Retail businesses across India continued to show healthy growth from pre-pandemic levels, recording an 18% increase in sales in July compared to the same month in 2019, the state said on Wednesday. Retailers Association of India.
According to the latest business survey by the Retailers Association of India (RAI), the eastern India region recorded the highest year-on-year growth of 25% last month, followed by the south at 21%, the north at 16% and West at 10%.
In terms of categories, sporting goods saw the highest growth rate with a 32% increase from July 2019, followed by footwear and furniture & furnishings at 23% each.
Apparel and apparel grew 22%, while quick service restaurants, consumer durables and electronic footwear posted 17% growth, according to the survey.
The jewelry category was up 15% in July this year compared to the same month in 2019, while food and groceries were up 11%. Beauty, wellness and personal care experienced the weakest growth with an increase of only 3%.
“Retail businesses across the country are doing well as healthy sales growth from pre-pandemic levels continues. Key categories like apparel and footwear are showing traction,” said RAI’s CEO, Kumar Rajagopalan.
Given this trend, he said, “retailers are expecting a good holiday season, which could bring joy to businesses.”
In June, retail businesses across the country also increased their sales by 13% compared to the same month in 2019.
