Ginger, high prices in supermarkets

The volumes of ginger available on the market are not sufficient to meet demand, but prices remain competitive. At this time of year, most products come from China, Brazil and Peru. Italian ginger, on the other hand, is still very limited in terms of volumes. Two days ago, in a large distribution chain in northern Italy, bulk ginger from Peru was sold for €5.59 per kilo. Organic ginger, also Peruvian and packaged in Italy, was about twice as expensive (€9.93/kg).

As far as markets are concerned, during the confinement there was a shortage of products caused both by logistical problems and because the producing countries were exporting less. Things have rebalanced in the summer and fall, but prices are still high.

The fact that growing ginger starts with the rhizome has led to higher demand and a higher price, which has led to greater interest in selling as many rhizomes as possible in producing countries.

These quantities would have been far too high 10 years ago, but in the last two years the demand has increased tenfold and the Italian market has also started to demand more products. Ginger is considered a vegetable with high nutraceutical properties, including being a powerful anti-inflammatory supplement.
