KUALA LUMPUR, 11 August ― Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade recorded strong year-on-year (year-on-year) growth of 44% to reach RM132.8 billion in June 2022 with a Huge increase in motor vehicle sales, Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said.
Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the improved performance was attributed to the retail sub-sector which grew by RM15.6 billion, or 38.4 per cent, to 56.2 billion. of RM, while wholesale increased by 19.3% or 9.8 RM. billion, to RM60.5 billion.
“During the same period, motor vehicles jumped 1,642.8% or RM15.2 billion to RM16.1 billion,” the DoSM said.
For a month-to-month comparison, the value of sales rose 2.5%, led by the motor vehicle subsector which rose 15.8%.
The DoSM said the higher growth in the motor vehicle subsector this month was boosted by motor vehicle sales, which saw an increase of 2,430.2%, or $8.5 billion. RM, to reach 8.8 billion RM.
Next came motor vehicle parts and accessories, which increased by 1,026.2%; maintenance and repair of motor vehicles (+1,211.2 per cent); and sale, maintenance and repair of motorcycles (+1,693.8%).
In terms of volume index, wholesale and retail trade recorded a year-on-year growth of 35.8%, mainly driven by motor vehicles and retail trade which increased by 1,529.9% and 31 .3%, respectively.
Similarly, wholesale trade also registered a positive growth of 10.7%. However, for the seasonally adjusted volume index, it was down 2.3% month-on-month. ― Bernama
