The value of retail trade registered a significant year-on-year increase in June, while volume activity remained more subdued, reflecting price increases that accelerated after the war in Ukraine.

According to data released by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), the Retail Trade Turnover Value Index for June 2022 recorded a strong increase of 20.1% compared to the respective period of the year. last year, while the retail turnover volume index for the same month increased by 9.3% year on year.

For the period January-June 2022, the value index is estimated to have registered an increase of 14.4% and the volume index marked an increase of 4.6% compared to the same period of 2021, added Cystat.

By economic activity, computer and telecommunications equipment, curtains, carpets, books, stationery, sports equipment, toys, flowers, plants, watches, jewelry, etc. recorded the largest annual increase in value with 32.4% year-on-year, followed by the retail sale of automotive fuel in specialized stores with 31.3% and food, beverages and tobacco in non-specialized stores with 22 .1%. Non-motor fuel retail trade grew 18.8% year on year in June, Cystat added.

In terms of volume index, IT and telecommunications equipment, curtains, carpets, books, stationery, sports equipment, toys, flowers, plants, watches, jewelry, etc. non-specialty stores with 14.9% and retail sales in non-specialty stores with 13.6%.

The volume of automotive fuel retail sales in specialized stores fell by 11% in June over one year despite its increase in value which amounted to 31%.
