In July 2022, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade in Malta increased by 1%, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.
At the same time, retail trade increased by 0.3% in both the euro area and the EU, compared to June 2022.
In July 2022 compared to July 2021, the retail sales index adjusted for calendar effects decreased by 0.9% in the euro area and by 0.5% in the EU.
In the euro area, in July 2022 compared to June 2022, retail trade volume increased by 0.4% for motor fuels and by 0.1% for food, beverages and tobacco, while it decreased by 0.4% for non-food products.
In the EU, retail trade volume increased by 0.3% for motor fuels, while it decreased by 0.2% for non-food products and by 0.1% for food products, beverages and tobacco.
The largest monthly increases in total retail volume were recorded in Germany (+1.9%), the Netherlands (+1.7%), Luxembourg and Poland (+1.5% each) . The largest decreases were observed in Austria (1.8%), Finland (1.7%) and Spain (1.0%).
Malta registers an annual increase of 9%
In the euro area, in July 2022 compared to July 2021, retail trade volume decreased by 2.4% for food, beverages and tobacco and by 0.9% for non-food products, while that it increased by 0.6% for automotive fuels.
In the EU, retail trade volume fell by 2.0% for food, drinks and tobacco and by 0.7% for non-food products, while it increased by 1.3 % for automotive fuels.
The largest annual declines in total retail trade volume were recorded in Denmark (-7.7%), Luxembourg (-6.3%) and Ireland (-5.6%). The highest increases were observed in Slovenia (+25.0%), Malta (+9.0%) and Poland (+7.6%).
