Italy’s consumer confidence index drops, so does retail up

The Italian consumer confidence index deteriorated from 98.3 to 94.8 in July 2022. The deterioration was recorded, in particular, for the economic and future indices which fell from 93.9 to 84.9 and 98.8 to 92.9 respectively. Regarding the climate of business confidence, the Istat economic climate indicator (IESI) deteriorated from 113.4 to 110.8.

The retail confidence index fell from 107.2 to 108.1. In particular, the improvement is due to expectations on future sales, while valuations on the current business trend have deteriorated further and inventories are assessed as increasing.

The climate of confidence in the manufacturing sector fell from 109.5 to 106.7, according to figures from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat).

More specifically, unfavorable signals came from assessments of order books and, to a lesser extent, expectations about future production.

Respondents to the survey considered that inventories had declined.

Market services confidence deteriorated from 109.0 to 104.1. Firms reported a worsening of all trust-building variables.

Indeed, respondents were pessimistic about current order books, current business developments and future order books.
