EU January 2022 retail volume up 0.6% YoY, 8.3% YoY

In January 2022, seasonally adjusted data retail volume increased 0.2% in the euro area and 0.6% in the European Union (EU) compared to December 2021 figures, according to estimates from Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office. In December 2021, retail trade volume decreased by 2.7% in the euro area and by 2.6% in the EU.

In January of this year, the schedule was adjusted retail sales index iincreased by 7.8% in the euro area and by 8.3% in the EU compared to January 2021 figures.

In the euro zone and the EU in January this year, retail trade volume increased by 0.2% and 1% respectively for non-food products compared to the December 2021 figure.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest monthly increases in total retail trade volume were recorded in Poland (+5.9%), Luxembourg (+4.2%) and Denmark (+ 3.7%). The largest decreases were observed in Slovenia (minus 4.6%), Portugal (minus 2.8%) and Lithuania (minus 2.5%).

In January this year, retail trade volume increased by 14.8% and 15.3% respectively in the euro area and the EU for non-food products compared to January 2021 figures.

Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in total retail trade volume were recorded in Slovenia (up 32.3%), Poland (up 19.5%) and Lithuania (up 18.2%). The only decrease was observed in Finland (minus 2.4 percent).
