KUALA LUMPUR (11 Aug): Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade value in June 2022 jumped 44% while its volume increased 35.8% year-on-year, driven by a rise car sales value of 1,642.8% and volume of 1,529.9%, according to the Department. of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) Thursday 11 August.
“Wholesale and retail sales value recorded RM132.8 billion in June 2022, recorded a growth of 44% year-on-year. The positive growth was contributed by all sub -sectors, namely motor vehicles 1,642.8%, retail 38.4%, and wholesale 19.3%.
“In terms of volume index, wholesale and retail trade grew 35.8% year-on-year to 144.3 points. The increase was supported by the increase motor vehicles by 1,529.9%, retail by 31.3% and wholesale by 10.7%,” the DOSM said in a statement.
In monthly terms, Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade volume in June 2022 was down 2.3% from May 2022, the statistics department said.
Compared to a year earlier, the value of Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade in June 2022 increased by 44% compared to the 19.6% year-on-year increase in May 2022, according to the DOSM.
The DOSM said the country’s wholesale trade value in June 2022 rose 19.3% to RM60.5 billion from a year earlier, retail trade value soared 38 percent, 4% to RM56.2 billion while the value of motor vehicle sales climbed 1,642.8% to RM16.1 billion.
The value of June 2022 motor vehicle sales rose 1,642.8% year-on-year compared to the 20.1% year-on-year increase in May 2022, according to the DOSM.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade volume index in June 2022 rose 35.8% to 144.3 points year-on-year on the year-on-year rise of May 2022 at 14.7%, the DOSM said.
Wholesale trade volume in June 2022 increased by 10.7% year-on-year, retail trade volume climbed 31.3% while motor vehicle trade volume increased by 1 529.9%, according to the DOSM.

Meanwhile, the country’s 2Q22 wholesale and retail trade volume index rose 19.3 percent from a year earlier, the statistics department said.
In a separate statement, the DOSM specifies that in 2Q22, the volume index of wholesale and retail trade recorded a growth of 19.3% to reach 142.2 points compared to the same quarter of the previous year. .
“Meanwhile, as a quarter-on-quarter comparison, the volume index also increased by 5.6% in this quarter (2Q22),” the DOSM said.
DOSM, however, did not provide 1H22 aggregate figures for Malaysia’s wholesale and retail trade sales value and volume index.
