The market and media research organization says that 29 of Europe’s 40 largest national markets have seen an increase in cafes in the past 12 months, while the European cafe market has grown by 3, 2% overall, to reach 40,675 points of sale.
According to World Coffee Portal, the Project Café Europe 2022 market report is based on over 250 interviews with coffee industry consultants and representatives, over 250 surveys of industry leaders, over 6,000 surveys of coffee drinkers in four key European markets, field research and desk research. The cost of the annual report is not published.
The report found that coffee chains have experienced the greatest post-pandemic resilience, with Europe’s 20 largest coffee chains now accounting for almost half of total outlets in Europe.
UK-based Costa Coffee, owned by Coca-Cola, remains Europe’s largest coffee chain, with more than 3,200 stores in 19 European markets. The chain opened 87 new stores (net) in the last 12 months ending in February 2022, according to the report.

The fastest growing European coffeehouse chains over the past 12 months were McDonald’s-owned McCafé, Russia’s One Price Coffee and Starbucks, which opened 205, 240 and 108 new stores (net) respectively.
The market sizing figures in the report were finalized in February, before Russia invaded Ukraine. Meanwhile, locations in Ukraine in Russia that have been temporarily closed remain included in market size reports.
“Before the invasion, Ukraine was the fastest growing branded coffee market in Europe, growing 16% in the last 12 months to 259 outlets,” World Coffee Portal said. in a report announcement. “However, no future growth projections will be made by World Coffee Portal until the situation stabilizes.”
